Foreign Law (Laws of Other Countries)

This guide will help users navigate the domestic laws of a foreign country. For help with treaties or international case law, please use the International Law guide

What are Gazettes?

Official gazettes in most jurisdictions serve as the primary government publication for official notices and announcements, legislation, and more.

For example, the Diario Oficial de la Federación (D.O) is the official gazette of the federal government in Mexico and all legal matters and legislation must be published in the D.O. before they can go into effect. In many jurisdictions, the official gazette is the only published source for session laws and other primary legal materials. Although most countries publish a gazette, their regularity and content varies widely.

Gazettes in Print

The Legal Research Center has Official Gazettes and primary law in paper for only a few selected non-U.S. jurisdictions. Students should use the regional catalogs (California Western School of LawThomas Jefferson School of Law, and San Diego County Law Library) to search for gazettes by title or use the LRC's Interlibrary Loan service.

Gazettes Online

If a country is not included in one of the links above, use the alphabetical country tabs on this guide to navigate to primary sources.
