Summer Clerks Research Guide

Strategies and research tips for working law students

Asking for Help

How to ask for help — and get the best results:

  • Keep good notes, so that you can more accurately identify and frame your questions.
  • Say what you've already tried.
  • Say which databases or books you have access to.
  • Narrower questions are better, unless you need help with preliminary analysis.
  • Summarize your assignment and include important legal issues.

Ask a Librarian

Tip: Befriend your court librarian.

  • Your chambers policy might be that you can only work with court librarians.
  • Your court librarian is probably close by and available by phone.
  • Your court collection is likely to have what you need.
