Perma Links for Preserving Online Sources

This guide is a resource for using Perma.cc to create archival links and preserve online sources.

Getting Started with Perma

Once you have been registered for an account, you will receive an email from Perma with instructions on how to activate the account and create a password. Please follow the instructions in that email to activate your account.

As soon as you have activated your account, you are ready to start archiving

Archiving a Link using Perma.cc

Once you have logged in to your Perma.cc account, you can start creating Perma links for URLs by following these steps:

  1. Copy the URL you wish to preserve.
  2. Paste the URL you've selected into the bar on Perma.cc.
  3. Select the appropriate folder in which to save the link (e.g., your journal's folder, if you are a journal editor).
  4. Click the blue "Create Perma Link" button to save your link.

After capturing a record of your chosen URL, Perma.cc will generate a new Perma link for use in citations. After 24 hours, the link will become a permanent part of the archive.

Organizing Your Perma Links

Perma allows for easy organization of links. You can create a folder for each issue within a volume, and then a subfolder for each article within that issue.

There is no limit to how many folders and subfolders you can create.

All journal team members have access to all folders and all links within their respective journals. For example, JCEL members can access all folders and links within the JCEL account.

Browser Extensions and Bookmarklets

Perma.cc offers Chrome and Firefox browser extensions to allow for easier access. Once you've installed the extension in your browser of choice, click on the icon while viewing the web page you'd like to archive.

Alternatively, you can create Perma links by installing the Perma bookmarklet in your bookmarks bar.

See the Perma.cc browser tools page for more information.
