Perma Links for Preserving Online Sources

This guide is a resource for using Perma.cc to create archival links and preserve online sources.

Introduction

You’ve probably come across this problem before: you click on a link, only to find that the information you're looking for is now inaccessible. Maybe the content has been moved to another URL or taken down entirely, replaced by a 404 Error: Page Not Found display. Or maybe the web page is still there but has been edited, and no longer contains the same information.

Web content moves around and is taken down on a regular basis. In order to maintain access to a website, you must use a web archiving tool to create a permanent link before the content disappears. Harvard Law Library created Perma.cc to address the problem of reference rot and dead links. Perma creates permanent links that can be added to a citation, ensuring that a snapshot of a linked webpage will remain available to readers even if the original page itself changes in the future.
