Syllabus Statements
Your syllabus is a tool to communicate your expectations for your students and also to set the tone for your course. It should reflect your approach to teaching. We offer some examples of both the variety of statements you might include on your syllabi as well as variation in the language you might use. Includes sample statements on Diversity and Inclusion and a Kumeyaay Land Acknowledgement.
Race Talk Coaching Series: Understanding and Facilitating Difficult Dialogues on Race
The CEE Race Talk Coaching Series welcomes all USD faculty to attend “Race Talk: Understanding and Facilitating Difficult Dialogues on Race” to take a deep dive into understanding the complex and important questions regarding race and to take away concrete ideas on how to improve their facilitation skills. Drawing upon Race Talk and the Conspiracy of Silence by Dr. Derald Wing Sue, Professor of Psychology and Education at Columbia University, the coaching circle provides evidence-based information on:
-Characteristics of typical, unproductive conversations on race
-Tacit and explicit social rules related to talking about racial issues
-Race-specific difficulties and misconceptions regarding race talk
-Concrete advice for educators on approaching race in a new way

CEE offers multiple coaching sessions per semester.
Faculty Reading Circles
Faculty Reading circles are small, self-paced groups who meet at least twice a semester, virtually or in-person (observing COVID-19 safety practices), to discuss a selected book, provided by the CEE. Faculty from varied disciplines and stages in their career are welcomed to join. By participating, faculty will enhance their teaching through shared learning with colleagues. All meeting dates and times will be determined by the groups availability (collected during sign-up). An optional celebration lunch at the end of the semester is provided by the CEE.
