About Juneteenth

On June 17, 2021, President Biden signed into law the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, establishing June 19 as a federal holiday.

Juneteenth commemorates the arrival of Union forces in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, finally bringing into effect the Emancipation Proclamation and freeing the enslaved peoples there. Juneteenth has long been celebrated in Texas and spread across the United States before its designation as a federal holiday.

Juneteenth at USD

Juneteenth is a university-wide holiday at the University of San Diego. Inaugural celebrations of the holiday took place in 2022.
