Arab American Heritage Month has been observed in United States in the month of April since 2017, when the initiative for the official national designation was launched by the Arab American Foundation. Since then, U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Michigan.) and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan) have introduced resolutions to officially designate April as National Arab American Heritage Month. Resolutions are not laws or bills; rather, they are expressions of the “sentiments” of either the House or Senate. While the State Department has recognized April as Arab American Heritage Month and President Biden has issued a presidential proclamation celebrating it, the month has not received Congressional approval.

“It is an honor to introduce a resolution uplifting Arab American Heritage Month for the third year,” said Rep. Tlaib. “As an Arab American woman in Congress, I know how important it is to ensure we do all we can to make sure Arab Americans know that we belong in the United States and to show appreciation for our contributions to this country. Arab Americans make the United States a better place and I look forward to seeing this resolution adopted.” (press release, June 9, 2022, taken from Rep. Tlaib's website)
